Books-A-Million Reports Holiday Sales Results

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (January 13, 2003) ƒ{ Books-A-Million, Inc. (Nasdaq/NM:BAMM) today announced that sales for the nine-week period ended January 4, 2003, totaled $107.2 million compared with $110.2 million during the same period in fiscal 2002, a decrease of 2.7%. Comparable store sales for the period decreased 5.5% compared with the same period of last year. Comparable store sales for the Company¡¦s core book business decreased 6.9% during the period.

For the first 11 months of fiscal 2003, sales increased 0.2% to $410.3 million from $409.5 million in the year-earlier period. Comparable store sales for the first 11 months of fiscal 2003 decreased 2.6%. Comparable book sales in the Company¡¦s core book business decreased 0.7% during the period.

Books-A-Million will no longer issue quarterly or annual sales and earnings per share guidance. The final results for the year ending February 1, 2003, will be released as scheduled in mid-March.
